Golden Milk Green Smoothie
It took me a while to hop on the turmeric train. It has been one of those things – after hearing about it once, it continued to come into my experience through conversations, social media and products seen at the store. I’m not one of those people who hears about a nutrition trend and shrugs it off; I ride the wave and do my research. I want to know exactly why a certain food is garnering all the attention because there is usually a good reason why. In general, people are starting to think about food differently, and it’s amazing to witness the concept of “let food by thy medicine” increasingly becoming accepted in our society. Aristotle would be so proud.
Turmeric is one of the most healing items we can have in our spice cabinets. Known mostly for its anti-inflammatory properties, it is said to both fight and potentially reverse other ailments as well: depression, arthritis, and IBS to name a few. It can be used in a number of ways – other than in traditional curry dishes of course – and I often find myself sprinkling it on salads, avocado toast, hummus dips and more.
Golden Milk may be a new concept among a long list of nutritional trends, but it has actually been used in Ayurvedic medicine for hundreds of years. The powder is a blend of turmeric, dates and herbs, whose combination results in a bitter-sweet taste, no one ingredient overpowering the other.
Traditionally consumed as a tea or tonic, I knew I would find a way to include it in my morning smoothie. After learning it pairs perfectly with sweet fruits such as pineapple and mango, I gave it a whirl, and was pleasantly surprised at the result. I literally felt my mood and energy increase with each sip!
