Bulletproof Coffee

All About Bulletproof Coffee

A little background: Dave Asprey of the Bulletproof brand came up with this drink combining coffee, MCT/brain octane oil, and grass-fed butter (or ghee, which I recommend).

The reasoning behind this is coffee is a stimulant. It affects our blood sugar by raising cortisol (stress hormone) levels, which are naturally elevated in the morning anyway (it's what wakes you up). We don't want cortisol that is too high, or it can send you into that "fight or flight" response. So that is why you get those people that are jittery and anxious after dumping a bunch of caffeine in to their system. Also when cortisol spikes, this can cause blood sugar to crash, instigating that spike and crash cycle fueled by hunger and cravings the rest of the day.

Healthy fats - as found in bulletproof coffee - will negate the sudden spike in cortisol, causing blood sugar levels to remain at bay. Coconut oil (or ideally brain octane oil - a more potent coconut oil) is so good for brain health and will leave you feeling clear and energized. It is also a medium-chain triglyceride, which is a fancy name for the type of fat. MCTs bypass being processed in the liver and immediately get converted to energy.

Also, healthy fats are like the ultimate brain and energy food. To start your day with a high quality source - without the presence of other macronutrients (carbs and protein) - will leave you feeling clear, energized, hormonally balanced and will keep your body in its natural fat-burning state; the metabolism of fat in our bodies rather than glucose (sugar for fuel) is known as more efficient and amazing for energy and brain clarity.

Ghee: a clarified butter, from which the casein and lactose have been removed (the protein and sugar found in dairy that causes people the most issue). It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years and is super healing, rich in fat soluble vitamins. It also contains butyrate, which has been shown to help with colon health and positively affect insulin levels. Lastly, just like coconut oil, it can support weight loss as it immediately gets converted to energy in the body – not fat! The secret ingredient in ghee (and grass-fed butter if tolerable) is butyrate, which is the same compound produced by good bacteria in your gut when fed resistant starch. It is a short-chain fatty acid that is said to lower blood cholesterol, cut triglycerides (fat), and increase insulin sensitivity (which we want). It has even been proven to reduce inflammation and improve the health of our gut lining.

Place everything in your high-speed blender and process until good and frothy! Why you need to blend and not just stir: blending the ghee and MCT oil breaks it up into something called Micelles, which allow your body to use fat for energy
